Attributes of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a person, not an entity or force. The Holy Spirit is referred to as "He". He may be lied to (Acts 5:3-4), resisted (Acts 7:51), grieved (Ephesians 4:30), quenched (1 Thess. 5:19), and outraged (Hebrews 10:29).
Attributes of the Holy Spirit
- Is the engine of our sanctification (Romans 8:12-13, 2 Corinthians 3:18)
- Was active in the creation of the universe (Gen. 1:2)
- Is the source of all prophesy and revelation from God (I Peter 1:21)
- Dwells in Christians (John 14:17)
- Is the author of all scripture (2 Timothy 3:16)
- Our Helper ( Greek: parakletos - comfort, protection, guidance) (John 16:7)
- Is the Spirit of Truth who will guide us in all Truth (John 16:13)
- Speaks to us and shows us the right path to take (Isaiah 30:21)
- Produces in us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal 5:22-23)
- Leads us in righteousness (Romans 8:14)
- Helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26)
- Speaks to us (Acts 8:29, Acts 13:2)
- Intercedes for us with God so that we act according to God's plan for our lives (Romans 8:27)
- Is the source of the Spirit of grace and supplication (Zechariah 12:10)
- Is either the source of or a contributor of supernatural wisdom (Acts 6:10)
- Directs evangelical efforts (Acts 16:6-7)
- Fellowships with us (2 Cor. 13:14)
- We are to seek to please him (Ephesians 4:30)
- Compels us to take a certain course of action (Acts 20:22)
- Appoints overseers for the flock of God (Acts 20:28)
- Enables power to cast out demons (Matthew 12:28)
- Enables us to love (Romans 15:30)
- Is the administrator of spiritual gifts (I Cor. 12:4)
- Gives life to our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11)
- Provides wisdom and skill, understanding and intelligence, knowledge and craftsmanship (Exodus 31:3, Exodus 35:30-35)
The Holy Spirit is everywhere in the Bible. This list is certainly not all inclusive. As we discover more attributes of the Holy Spirit, we will update this list from time-to-time.
