Christians get involved in many different things; however, they exist for four primary purposes.

Sometimes, serving God gets complex. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of variants of belief, with the vast majority of differences having no impact on Truth or the state of one's salvation. In heaven, we will find people who were Lutherans, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Baptists, Roman Catholics, Christian Missionary Alliance, and non-denominational. There will be people of all colors, races, and nationalities.
The ONLY thing that truly matters about our belief is Jesus. If Jesus is our righteousness, then nothing else is important.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 14:6 NKJV
and also:
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Revelation 22:13 NIV
Christians get caught up in all sorts of things: abortion, communion, baptism, the poor, evangelism, and so forth. While these things are important, they all take second place to our primary function:
1. To serve and glorify God
This function is the reason we were created. It’s why we are here:
everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”
Isaiah 43:7 NIV
We glorify God in many ways. We do it through our worship and praise, our fellowship with Him, our thanksgiving, and by living a holy life through the power of the Holy Spirit. We glorify God with tithes, offerings, devotions, lifestyle, and generosity.
2. To Minister to Others
There are 69 references in the Bible about this purpose. It is an unambiguous mandate for Christians.
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Matthew 25:35-36 NIV

3. Share The Gospel
But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
Luke 4:43 NIV
Many in Christendom embrace what they see as a direct mandate from our Lord to preach the Gospel to the entire world, commonly referred to as the Great Commission. However, at Tree Top, we hold a different perspective. While we believe that sharing the Gospel is a crucial aspect of our faith, we interpret the Great Commission as being specifically directed to Christ's eleven disciples in their unique context.
It is our privilege to share the Gospel because:
- Our love for others encourages us to share the peace and joy of Jesus Christ.
- We listen to the Holy Spirit and do the Father's Will as directed.
4. To Grow in our Relationship and Knowledge with God
God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9 ESV
One of the most overlooked functions of Christians is spiritual growth. It is one of the four core functions. If it were not an essential component of the Christian lifestyle, then God would whoosh us off to heaven right after we are saved. However, God leaves us here to do things for Him. Moreover, he empowers us with the Holy Spirit to enable us to grow, learn, and fellowship with Him.
When we stay focused on our core functions, it keeps us grounded in our service to Him.

Final Thoughts
We get caught up in all sorts of Christian activities. Baptism, communion, discipleship, abortion, Lent, missionary work, church building, youth groups, etc., consume much of our churches' time and money.
There’s nothing wrong with the “other functions;” however, they do not negate the Four Primary Functions listed in this article. If you become overwhelmed with church activities and need to cut some things, consider the Four Primary Functions and give them preference over other activities.
